This scholarship is awarded in three $1,000 installments over three semesters. Funds may be used for tuition and fees. The recipient must have a minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA.





Athletic Scholarships

Athletic Scholarships are awarded in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA.) Athletic Scholarships cover the cost of tuition & fees (per annually published schedule) up to 19 credit hours and required books. Students must be admitted to Bishop State as a regular, degree-seeking student and enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours within the declared program of study (with limited exceptions.) The Athletic Director is responsible for all eligibility aspects and submits the list of scholarship recipients to the Financial Aid Office. Students should contact the coach(es) of the sport in which they are interested for more information.

This scholarship fund was created in memory of Mr. Sigler, a Prichard resident who was enthusiastic about aviation and mentoring others. He was a 1985 graduate of the Alabama Aviation Technical College. This scholarship fund will provide financial assistance to a deserving student in the Aviation Manufacturing Technology program. Funds up to $500 per semester. Applicants must have a 2.75 GPA and must submit a minimum 250-word essay on how the scholarship will assist in meeting post-secondary financial obligations and career goals. Edna Harris Agnew Early Childhood Scholarship Fund

This $1,000 scholarship is named in memory of Mrs. Edna Ruth Harris Agnew, a graduate of the Mobile branch of Alabama State College, now Bishop State.  She went on to further her education at the Alabama State Teachers College (Alabama State University) earning Bachelor's and Master’s Degrees in Elementary Education. Passionate about education, she dedicated 40 years to enriching the lives of the youth of Mobile, AL. This scholarship was created by her granddaughter, Dr. Andrea C. Agnew, also an educator. It is available to graduates of Ben C. Rain High School who are enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program. Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA. Funds may be used for tuition, fees and books. Established by Dionne Jackson of Locs of Soul Salon in the amount of $500, the scholarship provides freshman Cosmetology and Barbering students with financial resources to purchase kits needed to provide competency-based knowledge, scientific and artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the haircare industry. Recipients should have a desire to specialize in natural hair or entrepreneurship, a 2.7 cumulative GPA, and must submit a 500-word essay on what inspired them to study cosmetology or barbering. Recipients would be required to pass a phone interview.

These scholarships are highly competitive; therefore, applicants are encouraged to pursue other scholarships as their first and second priorities, whenever possible. This up-to-$510 scholarship is available to those enrolled in a Health Sciences program with a minimum 2.0 GPA. This scholarship is funded by the Whiting family in memory of Ms. Minerva Chandler, who was born to enslaved laborers on December 25, 1870, on Orange Vale Plantation near Talladega. The plantation was home to Robert Montague Whiting, Sr., who was brought up in the thoughtful care of Ms. Chandler, as his mother passed when he was very young.

Student Emergency Fund

The Student Emergency Fund was created by the Bishop State Foundation to assist Bishop State students who encounter an unforeseen financial emergency that would otherwise prevent them from continuing their education at Bishop State. These funds are not intended to be used for routine expenses or as a consistent supplement to a student’s education funding sources. This funding is only available during the semester the student is enrolled and the emergency occurs.

 

The Student Emergency Fund can help with unanticipated financial emergencies caused by:

  • Housing and living expenses
  • Car repairs or transportation issues
  • Childcare
  • Family emergencies
  • Natural disasters
  • Unanticipated loss of employment

Assistance is granted without regard to race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability, or national origin.

Your application must be completed in its entirety for requests to be considered. A student may request up to $500 per semester or $750 in one calendar year. There is a $1,500 lifetime maximum.
